First Edition
Hardcover. 1st Edition 1st Printing. 303p. Blue decorated cloth, titled in white with a red cross on the front board. A slight touch of rubbing to the spine lettering else clean and fresh. Near fine condition. An attractive example of the original 1923 printing. Although the KKK is associated with anti-Black racism, the Klan of the early 20th century was more concerned with foreign immigrants. This novel was published in 1920s when the Ku Klux Klan was at the height of its popularity. Fueled by the reaction of White Protestant America to immigration, the KKK of the 1920s was hugely popular in the Midwest and West and was characterized by rallies against Catholics and Jews. This was the era in which many of the standard tropes of the KKK (white hooded robes, cross burnings, etc.) became widespread. In this novel, we see the Klan portrayed as a brave group of loyal 100% Americans opposed to the evil Catholics who are attempting to destroy truth, justice, and the American Way.
