The author, Susan Branch Bradford Eppes (1848-1942), was born and reared at the Pine Hill Plantation in Leon County, Florida. (The plantation has been established in about the year 1830 by her father Edward Bradford.) In this companion piece to her previous book, The Negro of the Old South, she provides a personal memoir describing the years 1850 and 1866 which draws heavily on the diary which she kept through those years.
