Mircea Eliade has spent a lifetime exploring the origins, meaning and mysteries of mankind's spiritual inner being. He is the Joseph Campbell of religion - not myth. This first volume was ably translated (from the French) into clear and direct English - a hallmark of his writing. It is difficult to speak knowingly of neolithic religion because the evidence is largely circumstantial and evolutionary. That is, we divine from our own religious present what must have existed prior to the forming of current ideas. One of his main points is that peoples around the world, for whatever reason, seemed to be instinctually drawn toward the worship of something - an object, animal, human or unseen god or goddess. In this first volume he explores various cultures and their beliefs - the Mayas, Greeks, Iranians, neolithic man, Egypt, other Middle East groups.a dazzling array of cultures and societies. As the imagination grew, so did belief in an unseen world. Of particular interest is the section on ancient Israeli beliefs and the origins of Yahweh. The chapters on religion in Greece were notable for their abundant detail. Even in the most isolated areas, the same rites and beliefs emerged - the idea of sacrifice, the belief in another life, the battle of good vs evil, the idea of holy representatives and eventually the thought of eternal life. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xvii, 489 pages.

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Here is a 1970 Harper Torchbook edition (TB 1236) of Mircea Eliade's important treatise, "Rites and Symbols of Initiation : The Mysteries of Birth and Rebirth" It is an important book for students and readers in anthropology. The Torchbook edition is now Out of Print. ********************************************** The following is taken from the book's cover blurb : "Professor Eliade takes one particular subject, the almost universal prevalence in human culture of some form of initiatory rite and custom, and treats it in a way that is at once scholarly and interpretive. We find in this book not merely a collection of data, but also a profound and insightful attempt to get, so to speak, under the skin of the data, and to discern the underlying meaning and purpose of initiation. The result is peculiarly satisfying both intellectually and spiritually. The longing for rebirth, for a new mode of existence, a transfiguration of all that is, has many secular as well as religious expressions. In her closing pages, Eliade discusses the way in which initiatory themes find expression in contemporary literature." (Thus making a profound connection between primitive sensibilities and the modern so-called advanced civilizations.) ******************************************** Said Thomas J. J. Altizer in a review of the book in "The Journal of Religion" : "One expects in Eliade an argument that is clear, precise, comprehensive, and fully documented. Here is a master of the phenomenological method in the study of the history of religions. . Eliade has succeeded in writing a brilliant analysis of the structure of initiatory patterns in primitive religions of the world." ************************************** SERIES : Harper Torchbooks (TB 1236) / TITLE : Rites and Symbols of Initiation : The Mysteries of Birth and Rebirth / AUTHOR : Mircea Eliade (1907 - 1986) / TRANSLATOR : Willard R. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First English Edition. "In this masterly study, M. Eliade takes up the problem of shamanism; he succeeds in defining its bounds, so that, for the first time in the history of religions, a clear idea can be formed of what shamanism is and what it is not." - Profeessor M. Leenhardt. "Eliade's works are never limited to a simple description of facts: they always contain a keen analysis followed by a synthesis. The present book has the same qualities. It is clearly the best work on shamanism published so far." - Professor R.A. Stein. "For the English translation of his book, Professor Eliade has freely revised, corrected, and augmented. The work, which is addressed to the nonspecialist reader, is the first to treat shamanism in a comprehensive way." - dust jacket. "xxiii, [1], 610 pages. Index. Extensive list of works cited.
