Spine sunned and a couple of ink stains on edges of front boards; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 5 black and white plates, including portrait frontispiece. Title page within decorative borders. Memoirs of the earlier life and career of the Duc de Lauzun (1747-93), French soldier, who served against the British during the American Revolution, returning to France in 1783. During the French Revolutionary War he took service with the army of the Republic and fought against the rebels in the Vendee. Following charges of lack of civic virtue and conspiracy against the Republic, he went to the guillotine on the last day of 1793, his wife following the next year. Translated by Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1899-1930), Scottish writer, educated at Winchester and the University of Edinburgh, and translator of Proust.
