Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A treasure by the great actress, author, politician, and friend of Eleanor Roosevelt's, Helen Gahagan Douglas, boldly *SIGNED* by the author and dated 1964 across almost the entire width of the first free endpage, this is a first edition in Good condition with a Fair condition dust jacket. Helen Gahagan Douglas starred in the movie, She, based on the famous novel by H. Rider Haggard, thereby becoming "She who must be obeyed." Then she took up politics and politicians, becoming a U.S. Representative and openly having an affair with Congressman (and later President) Lyndon B. Johnson. She served three terms in Congress before she became the victim of a smear campaign during a run for a seat in the Senate, designed to make it seem that she had Communist sympathies. Richard Nixon was involved with this campaign and Douglas is given credit for being the first to dub him "Tricky Dick". This book is informed by Helen's 23-year friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt and includes over 150 photographs of her in public and private life. The book's interior is completely clean with no creases, marks or damage to pages. Exterior covers are very slightly soiled (barely visible), toned on the periphery, and show light water stains along the top and bottom edges of the back cover only. None of these stains reached the pages inside. None of the book's corners are bumped and there is not more than a hint of rub wear to bottom edges. The dust jacket is not price-clipped ($5.95) and the front panel is completely clean but the back panel shows light soiling. Both front and back show light scratches and rubbing. It has some wear along the edges including light creases and some chips and tears, the longest of which is about 2". Will be bubble-wrapped to protect the corners and shipped in a sturdy box to ensure safe delivery. Signed by Author(s).
