A first edition of this lesser known volume by Clare Leighton in which she demonstrates her her affinity for rural life in Mid-West America. Over the course of a long and prolific career, Leighton wrote and illustrated numerous books praising the virtues of the countryside and the people who worked the land. In the present work, illustrated with her idiosyncratic wood engravings, Leighton offers stories and her personal impressions of rural life. Leighton was the first woman to produce a book on wood-engraving, and played an important part in popularising the medium. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper. The sticker beneath has an ink inscription sharing Christmas well-wishes. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. The cloth is faded to the spine, which is very lightly bumped to the head and tail. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good. book.
