Poor condition. Full title - THE HOLY BIBLE: CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS: TOGETHER WITH THE APOCRYPHA. TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES, AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED, BY THE SPECIAL COMMAND OF HIS MAJESTY KING JAMES I. OF ENGLAND. WITH MARGINAL NOTES AND REFERENCES. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, AN INDEX; AN ALPHABETICAL TABLE OF ALL THE NAMES IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, WITH THEIR SIGNIFICATIONS; AND TABLES OF SCRIPTURE WEIGHTS, MEASURES, AND COINS; JOHN BROWN'S CONCORDANCE, &C. &C. EMBELLISHED WITH TWENTY-FIVE ENGRAVINGS. Paged as [1-4], 1-1080, 1-72. Hardcover: H 28cm x L 23cm. Contemporary full leather binding heavily worn (scuffing, peeling and losses to leather, etc.); front board detached; spine has five raised bands wit dulled but discernable gilt lettered "Holy Bible" on black label within second compartment from head; rear board only tenuously attached by single binding string. Marbled pastedowns but lacking marbled front and rear free endpapers. Foxing/toning throughout with occasional creased corners and edge-wear to leaves. Text block remains reasonably firm. Old Testament has its own title page [2] as does New Testament (p. 835) and "A Brief Concordance . . ." (immediately following page 1080) all of which have M. Carey 1813 imprints. Several single page maps and plates; foldout maps (with tears, creases, and no longer following original folds but still intact) between pages [4]-1, 172-173, 282-283; foldout map between pages 930-931 lacks large portion. Pages 677-680 are "Family Record" pages featuring handwritten notes regarding various people with the Carmichael surname written in antiquarian ink by various hands recording various marriages (1830s-1858), births (1807-1840), and deaths (1826-1868). Front pastedown bookplate for G.W. Casilear which should be George Washington Casilear (1825-1912) who held several significant patents regarding tamper-proof ink and printing techniques and was employed at the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing starting in December 1862 through October 1893 where he was initially hired as an engraver and etcher but was appointed Custodian of Dies and Rolls eventually leading to being Superintendent of Engraving. The brother of landscape painter John William Casilear, George W. Casilear is also noted as the engraver of an 1850 Sacramento city view and an 1851 San Francisco view. One would hope that Casilear would have designed his own bookplate but, if so, it is a modest example, albeit certainly elegant, of the work of one of the country's premier engraver-etchers. Bible was acquired from a Washington DC estate but with no further provenance known as to its connections to the Carmichael clan or to Casilear who, although born in New York and passed away in Charlottesville, Virginia, had his primary career in the nation's capital and his gravesite is at Oak Hill Cemetery in the Washington's Georgetown neighborhood. Pre-1820 American bibles are getting to be rather uncommon and Mathew Carey's various bible editions are the best of the early Federal period. Sold as is with all faults. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 9 pounds (4.08 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

First Edition
Philadelphia: Published by Robert Johnson, C. & A. Conrad & Co. And Mathew Carey, Booksellers and Stationers, 1809. 300pp. First Edition. 12mo. Contemporary full sheep; spine with red leather title label and gilt rules, additionally stamped "2" and "Prose;" coarse gray double endpapers. Binding with minor scuffing and rubbing; two small losses to endpapers; heavily foxed; pp.249/250 with very small paper loss to margin, just touching a letter or two; good. In 1809, The American Prose Miscellany, was published by Johnson, Conrad, and Carey in Philadelphia. In the same year, under the same imprint, The American Poetical Miscellany appeared. The American Prose Miscellany is a reader or an anthology of biographical, travel, literary, and political writings by British, French, and American authors. Foreign writers include Dr. Samuel Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith, Denis Diderot, and Voltaire. American (or Irish-American) writers represented here are "Dr. [Benjamin] Franklin," "M[athew]. Carey," and "W[illia]m Sampson." Franklin's writings comprise "A Parable against Persecution, or Toleration and Philanthropy Inculcated;" "The Whistle-A True Story;" and "The Way to Wealth." While the present title page does not refer to a companion volume, the bookbinding does. The spine is labeled "American Miscellany," and it is additionally gilt-stamped " [Volume] 2" and, at the tail, "Prose," to distinguish it on the bookshelf. (NB. Another example of these two volumes, bound together, is included in the Michael Papantonio collection of early American bookbindings held at AAS.) Well-represented in institutions, but scarce to commerce, in an attractive and early, if not period, binding. Shaw and Shoemaker 16846. NB. Although no editor is indicated for The American Prose Miscellany, a separate 1809 entry in Shaw & Shoemaker (17407) identifies a separate two-volume set, The American poetical and prose miscellany; original and selected, under the (publisher?) heading "William Duane." Ten "Original Letters" contained in the present The American Prose Miscellany are simply attributed to an unnamed "Editor." Is Duane the editor here as well as a contributor? William Duane was born in Lake Champlain, New York and educated in Ireland. In the 1790s he settled in Philadelphia and worked with Benjamin Franklin Bache (Dr. Franklin's grandson) on the newspaper Aurora. After Bache's death, Duane married his widow and continued the newspaper which supported Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican party. Duane published several books and his manuscripts at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania contain notes and commentaries on politics, economics, religion, and philosophy. His possible essays in The American Prose Miscellany are on more domestic subjects and include letters on "Popularity," "Family Attachments," "Disputation," "Card Playing," and "Novel Reading."gives a separate entry for this title.
