Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. John Leighton (illustrator). Edited by Rev George Gilfillan, including The Airs of all the Songs. and an Original Life of Burns, by the editor. In full maroon leather, a little bumped and worns to corners and edges, attractive gilt title and tooling to top cover, blind tooling to lower. Spine has been replaced with similar, gilt title and tooling. Internally, the intended green cloth top cover has been tipped in to front pastedowm with its attractive gilt, black and red ink tooling, whilst the intended spine has been tipped into the ffep, intended decorative titlepage, followed by the Prospectus page stating amongst other things that the work will be published in 15 part at 2 shillings each or 30 parts at 1 shilling each!, portrait, another title page, 18 b&W plates, landscapes and portraits, (viii), 16 pp, (6) so as people could enter a list of subscribers, + 1 stunning folding portrait of Burns on segmented linen backed paper. This is the prospectus for the National Burns which came along shortly after in either 2 or 4 volumes. Worth the price just for the fold out portrait! (250*202 mm).
