Frauen und Film or Women and Film was founded in 1974 by the director Helke Sander in Berlin; it was then and remains now the only feminist film periodical in Europe. The journal was founded by Helke Sander and Claudia von Alemann at the height of the women's movement following the 1st International Women's Film Seminar held in 1973 in Berlin. Widely considered the most important journal discussing feminist theory in film in Germany and beyond. The authors dealt critically with sexism in film and television establishing a critical forum where women's film politics and theory could be debated and expounded upon. Published by the authors from 1974 to 1982 in Berlin, publication was subsequently moved to Frankfurt in 1983 where it continues to published by Verlag Stroemfeld / Roter Stern (Frankfurt am Main). At time of writing, sixty-six editions have been published.
