Paperback. Condition: Very Good. No political concept is more used, and misused, than that of democracy. Nearly every regime today claims to be democratic, but not all 'democracies' allow free politics, and free politics existed long before democratic franchises. This book is a short account of the history of the doctrine and practice of democracy, from ancient Greece and Rome through the American, French, and Russian revolutions, and of the usages and practices associated with it in the modern world. It argues that democracy is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for good government, and that ideas of the rule of law, and of human rights, should in some situations limit democratic claims. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Bernard Williams's remarkable essay on morality confronts the problems of writing moral philosophy, and offers a stimulating alternative to more systematic accounts which seem nevertheless to have left all the important issues somewhere off the page. Williams explains, analyses and distinguishes a number of key positions, from the purely amoral to notions of subjective or relative morality, testing their coherence before going on to explore the nature of 'goodness' in relation to responsibilities and choice, roles, standards, and human nature. The final chapters make a fascinating enquiry into what morality is about, looking beyond happiness to other human aims and ideals. This re-issue of a classic in moral philosophy includes a new foreword by the author. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This Very Short Introduction traces the history of paleoanthropology from its beginnings in the eighteenth century to the latest fossil finds. Although concentrating on the fossil evidence for human evolution, it also covers the latest genetic evidence about regional variations in the modern human genome that relate to our evolutionary history. Bernard Wood draws on over thirty years of experience to provide an insider's view of the field and some of the personalities in it, and demonstrates that our understanding of human evolution is critically dependent on advances in related sciences such as paleoclimatology, geochronology, systematics, genetics, and developmental biology. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The twentieth century in Europe witnessed some of the most brutish episodes in history. Yet it also saw incontestable improvements in the conditions of existence for most inhabitants of the continent - from rising living standards and dramatically increased life expectancy, to the virtual elimination of illiteracy, and the advance of women, ethnic minorities, and homosexuals to greater equality of respect and opportunity. It was a century of barbarism and civilization, of cruelty and tenderness, of technological achievement and environmental spoliation, of imperial expansion and withdrawal, of authoritarian repression - and of individualism resurgent. Covering everything from war and politics to social, cultural, and economic change, Barbarism and Civilization is by turns grim, humorous, surprising, and enlightening: a window on the century we have left behind and the earliest years of its troubled successor. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Signed and inscribed by the Author. Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), xix, 333 pp. Good, with cello tape to endpapers; in a like, mylar protected dust jacket. Photographs gladly provided upon request. From dust jacket: The Civl War was, in a sense, a "musical war." During the first year alone, an estimated two thousand musical compositions were produced, and the outpouring continued so that by the end of the conflict more music had been created, played, and sung, perhaps, than during all our other wars combined. Abraham Lincoln -- rail-splitter, circuit lawyer, preserver of the Union and emancipator of the slaves -- was no musician. Yet he was extremely fond of music and as President he probably heard more music than any other occupant of the White House. He heard the old patriotic tunes and the new songs of the Civil War period. He listened to bands, choruses, and soloists. He came to know the songs and the singers, the bands and their leaders. He heard exuberant serenaders outside the White House and quiet singers within; he heard noisy bands in the streets of Washington and he listened to their soft strains at evening in many of the "hundred circling camps." Here, as told by Kenneth A. Bernard, is an account of the music of the era and of Lilncoln's relationship to it. Against a background of specific events, Professor Bernard shows how the music of the war was inspired, how it inspired and affected the soldiers and the folk back home, and, finally, how it inspired and affected Lincoln himself. Lincoln and the Music of the Civil War presents a fresh approach to an understanding and appreciation of the emotional side of the great conflict. No President, before or since, has been sung to and played to as much as was Lincoln. No President enjoyed the sound and sentiment of music any more than did Lincoln. Presidential Biography, Abraham Lincoln, American Civil War, United States Civil War, U. S. History, American History, Americana, U.S.-iana. zslic.
