Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Macmillan And Co., 1911; First Edition; 8vo.; 546 pp.; Blue cloth covered boars with gilt pictorial to front and gilt title to spine; Corners and spine ends bumped and rubbed; Small tear to top of spine; Tissue covered Colored Frontispiece and fifteen full plate color illustrations; Some foxing to endpapers otherwise Clean and bright pages; A Very Good+ copy of this anthology of myths and legends, the first to be illustrate in color; $95.00 This is a collection of whimsical legends, myths, and ghost stories written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually the pen-name of clergyman Richard Harris Barham. The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. This is the first edition to feature full color illustrations from Harry George Theaker, a successful illustrator, particularly of children's books. This is one of the first books he illustrated. Due to its popularity, Theaker was commissioned to work on countless others.
