Hardcover. designer: Ernst Reichl (illustrator). xix, 234 p.; 21.5 cm. Contents: I. Love of man and love of God (1-5) -- II. On the holy days (6-10) -- III. Pagans and heretics (11-15) -- IV. Christianity prefigures (16-19) -- V. The world of the present and the world to come (20-23) -- VI. Diverse topics (24-29) -- Epilogue: life in Christ (30) -- `After reading the sermons contained in Migne, volumes 38 and 39, and those in Morin's text--a total of somewhat more than 500--I found about 60 that seemed particularly persuasive, instructive, beautiful, or memorable. From these I selected 30 [PL 34 385 161 392 349 184 194 201 224, Mai 95, PL 360 183 348 150 241 1 364 10 300 81 374, Guelferb. 1, PL 22 73 43 273 274 355 340, Mai 126] that give as wide a representation as possible of Augustine's thought. Although the method of selection is naturally colored by my likes and dislikes, I believe I have done justice to every major topic covered within the sermons. Three of the sermons in this collection (2, 17, and 29 [PL 385 364 340]) are now attributed to St. Caesar of Arles (ca. 470-542). Their legitimacy in a collection of St. Augustine's sermons can be defended by the fact that St. Caesar, who was an heir to antiquity's liberal view of plagiarism, appropriated these sermons from St. Augustine, merely adding his own exordium or conclusion or changing a word here and there.' SUMMARY : This text examines the arguments of certain strident, present-day critics of Augustine, responding to the more inaccurate and unfair of these criticisms and arguing in favour of some of the historical, philosophical and theological perspectives which lie behind Augustine's most unpopular convictions. It offers an insightful analysis of Augustine's thought and of critical responses to that thought. Augustine's writings have continually met with both kindly readers and frank critics and interest in his thought has not waned even in our own times. Contemporary philosophers, theologians, spiritual writers, cultural theorists and social scientists take him to task for a number of positions ranging from human sexuality and the body, gender, personal freedom, religious liberty and the ethics of force, to his concepts of the self and God. More often than not today, Augustine's outlook is characterised as 'pessimistic', and he is charged with responsibility for a certain Christian malaise. Minor wear. GOOD. (vi), 56pp. Scarce. Mani, an Arsacid Iranian by birth, was born 216 AD in Mesopotamia (Iraq), which was ruled by Persia, Mani's parents were members of the religious sect of Elcesaites. The king of Persia put him to death in 274 or 277. Manichaeism's teaching was dualistic; the struggle between a good, spiritual world of light, and an evil, material world of darkness. Manichaeism spread far through the Aramaic-Syriac speaking regions and thrived between the third and seventh centuries. Manichaean churches and scriptures existed as far east as China and as far west as the Roman Empire.
