Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 30 pp. B/W illustrations. Tiny dog-ear at upper corner of saddle-stitched booklet. Catalogue for an exhibition at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax from 16 September to 19 October 1995, and the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina from 20 January to 1 March, 1996. "Titled after a work by Eva Hesse ., Contingent presents sculpture by women that manifests gendered, physical presence within a specific aesthetic continuum. The mode of this work is abstraction, rooted in the formal legacy of Post-Minimalism. The coincidence of Post-Minimal tendencies with the Second Wave of the Women's Movement is thought by some to have helped to bring questions of female subjectivity and sexuality into mainstream critical art practice. In view of this history, perhaps the hoped-for restructuring cited by Jo Anna Isaaks is more of a destructuring, an erosion of rhetorically fixed designations inherited from the mythical 'rupture' between the modern and the post-modern.".
