Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. Scarce DELUXE EDITION in brown leather with stamped pictorial cover; professionally rebacked spine in complementary brown leather and gilt titling; patterned endpapers; frontispiece plus 107 illustrations and portraits (listed); index; 784pp. Howes A-316. Dustin #283. Dornbusch N-12a. Dowd #25. O'Keefe #70. Very Good- with rubbing of leather at extremities; 4-page signature loose at p. 615; front free endpaper signature loose at bottom (about 2"); book is still tight with no cracking at hinges. The title is descriptive as there were a lot of ups and downs for this likely neurotic officer. Armes claimed to have been court-martialed twenty-five times! His military career from 1861 to 1899 is covered - Civil War service, the Indian Wars -during which he met and knew General George A. Custer. This is a scarce account in an even more rare binding. Great collectible.
