Hardcover. First Edition. 323 pages. 9.5 by 13 inches. A collection of essays about and photographs of La Scala, concluding with a list of the performances between 1946 and 1956. First edition (first printing). A very good hardcover copy, lacking the dust jacket. With a long presentation inscription from Nobel Prize-winning physician Philip Stowalter Hench (1950, cortisone) to conductor and cellist Alfred Wallenstein.'With best wishes and sincere thanks for a wonderful evening of music. To maestro Wallenstein. To one La Scala performer (La Scala Grand) from another La Scala performer Piccolo Scala. Philip S. Hench' Below Hench's signature is that of his wife, Mary K. Hench and the date, Nov. 6, 1957. Hench's connection with La Scala eludes this cataloguer, but his Nobel Prize biographical statement cites an interest in music. An interesting association. [JSP01].
