Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Large 4to. First edition. viii, 32 pp. In the publisher's dark green pansy-grain cloth, gilt-titled to front board. aeg. All tissue guards present. 'Alfred Crowquill' was the pseudonym of the Forrester brothers, Charles Robert (180350) and Alfred Henry (180472), who between them wrote and illustrated a wide variety of satirical articles, comedy picture books, albums and books for children. Printed in colour and in black and white with illustrations reproduced in the form of wood-engravings, etchings and lithographs, and issued in cheap and sometimes ephemeral formats, their publications were tremendously popular. The eccentric name was a selling point heavily promoted in advertisements, and their work was historically significant for the ways in which it blurred the distinction between the tastes of the middle and working classes; valued as the source of light relief at the fireside, the Crowquill 'brand' was guaranteed to amuse even the sternest of consumers. A book by this unusual partnership was ubiquitous in the nursery, the parlour and even the kitchen and the maid's bedroom. A scarce title nowadays save in reprint or dreaded print-on-demand. Volume has been professionally re-backed and with new end-papers.

Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1871), who published under the pseudonym Alfred Crowquill, was an illustrator and humorous writer largely known for his work in 'Punch' and the 'Illustrated London News'. His illustrations had a considerable influence in the development of Victorian children's books. Forrester discovered an aptitude for literary and artistic pursuits from an early age, and was soon associated with writing for periodical publications, including Colburn's New Monthly, Bentley, and Punch magazine. He often wrote short tales, songs, children's stories, and occasional burlesques. He could also draw and worked on wood, etchings and caricatures using pen and ink, specialising in anthropomorphic animals, occasi250onally illustrating stories for his brother Charles Robert Forrester (1803 1850), who wrote under the pseudonym Hal Willis. He also made several popular ceramics of curious flowers and contemporary subjects, including a "Memorial of the Great Exhibition of 1851" and a statuette of Wellington Bear. He illustrated plays for children in Dean & Son's series, Little Plays for Little People. In 1854 Julia Corner wrote a play for children based around the Beauty and the Beast fairy story which was illustrated by Forrester working under the name of Alfred Crowquill.[3]Forrester's Phantasmagoria of Fun appeared in two volumes in 1843 under his Alfred Crowquill pseudonym. It contains humorous sketches with an animal theme.[4] His Strange Surprising Adventures of the Venerable Gooroo Simple., consisting of comic tales set in India, appeared in 1861, again under the pseudonym Alfred Crowquill.[4]Alfred Henry Forrester was buried at West Norwood Cemetery, near London.
