Both volumes have endpaper photos and maps, . *** IMPACT ON THE JAPANESE IMPERIAL AIR FORCE & THE WAR: . The significance of the "FLYING TIGERS" impact and contribution to the early air war over China against superior Japanese numbers and material is difficult to comprehend. The small amount of flyable American aircraft available on any given day to oppose the overwhelmingly large numbers of Japanese aircraft was depressing. Chennault stated that mostly there were only about 50 p-51 Tomahawk fighter planes available to fly on any given day, due to a lack of spare parts, fuel and bombs. Even with such a limited small group of well-trained fighter pilots, they were capable of striking devastating hits to the Japanese Air Force and prevent at will massive unopposed free bombing over China. During that time about 750,000 Chinese civilians were killed each day by the Japanese air forces . Without the "FLYING TIGERS" China would have surely been thoroughly devastated by the Japanese Air Force. The small margin of courageous American pilots kept the Japanese at bay for several years until their defeat. Never did a group of small but determined Americans deter such a large superior force of enemy planes. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: Former owner's copy has his name printed in gold stamping at top edge of front cover: "Paul P.
