Hardcover. First edition. pp. xv, 122. Slim 8vo. Fold-out tables, black & white plates. Very slightly wear to the corners of the boards, neat former owner's rubber stamp to ffep, contents very clean and umarked; very good/near fine in slightly darkened & soiled, otherwise good/very good dustjacket with a piece excised where the spine label would have shown through, and there is some tape at the top. This is volume 5 in The Canadian Historical Studies Series, published by Ryerson under the general editorship of Wallace, who contributed an introduction and notes to this title. This is the first reprint of this very important historical document since it was first published in 1790. Although nominally an ex-library copy, it is little marked as such, and its provenance is certainly unique.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo, xv, 122 pgs, folding tables (Vocabulary and Value of Furs), frontis, illustrations. Blue cloth, with gilt title on spine. Fine in Fine DJ. Edward Umfreville (born c. 1755 - d. 1789) came to Canada in 1771 to work as a writer for the Hudson's Bay Company. At York Factory on the Bay, he was transferred to Fort Severn. There, he assisted in the design of a comprehensive plan for the inland posts that the company proposed to establish. While at Fort Severn in 1774, Umfreville assisted Samuel Hearne with the planning for a proposed post at Cumberland House, Saskatchewan. In 1775, Umfreville was transferred back to York Factory where he became second in command until 1782 when the fort was captured by the French led by Jean-François de Galaup. The personnel and the staff of the fort were sent back to France as prisoners. Originally published in 1790, here is reprinted for the first time. Very well edited by the great fur trade historian, W. Stewart Wallace.
