In three parts, this deals with the making of the state, its physical environment, and research sources and methods. The author's inscription to the title page is addressed to Professor Dr Georg Eckert, signed and dated Bagdad 11/12/1953. At this time, Zaki Saleh was Professor of Modern History at the Higher Teachers College, Baghdad, and Georg Eckert (1912-77) Professor of History and Historiography at the Kant Hochschule in Braunschweig, whose institutional stamp is on the cover. Author inscription to title page. College labels to back endpapers, stamped "withdrawn" to title page. Submitted as part of the author's Doctorate at Columbia University, Saleh covers Mesopotamia's relations with the Ottoman Empire prior to 1798, Anglo-French rivalry including successes against Napoleon (1798-1809), Russian activity, and British supremacy up to 1860. PROVENANCE - inscribed to Mrs Carlton J.H. Hayes and dated San Francisco August 18, 1941. This would be Mary Evelyn Carroll, wife of US historian and diplomat Carlton Joseph Huntley Hayes (1882-1964) who served as US Ambassador to Spain during WW2, and taught at Columbia University during 1907-50. Subsequently donated to Lemoyne College, a Jesuit college in Syracuse, which awarded Hayes an honorary Doctorate in 1960. Inscribed by Author(s).
