The front cover has a gilt design but there's also four small stains. The latter is the only fault. Otherwise, the book is VG being tightly bound and square. Signed
Signed limited edition, number 386 of 430 copies of which this is one of 375 copies on "papier vélin", signed by Arthur Rackham. This French edition was published a year after the English. "The peculiar secret of Rackham's success in seizing upon the essence of the human and portraying it in animal form, which is after all the basic device of the morality, is unwittingly touched upon in Chesterton's delightful introduction to the 1912 edition of Aesop's Fables: 'There can be no good fable with human beings in it. There can be no good fairy tale without them.' Rackham's genius is such that it bridges the two, and carries the didactic fable into the realm of fairy story, and lends to the imaginative world of fairies a tangible and convincing reality" (Gettings, pp. 83-4). Riall, p. 111. Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, 1976. Quarto. Original cream buckram, spine and front cover lettered and stamped with animal devices in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Colour frontispiece and 12 colour plates, all tipped to grey paper stock with tissue guards captioned in red, as issued, 19 full-page illustrations, and further line drawings in the text, all by Rackham. Spine toned, spine gilt faded, buckram slightly marked and with a couple of bumps, outer leaves browned and foxed, offsetting to leaves facing line drawings and grey paper. A very good copy.
