Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No author, no publisher, no place of publication, no year. - 16mo. (16.5x10.5 cm) - 32 p. - Contemporary marbled paper covers, with hand-written title, in old ink: "Szt.-Marton-hegyi (Pannonhalmi) Szt. Benedek rend 989-1828". (Benedictine order of St.Martinsberg (Pannonhalma 989-1828). -- Very fine. - In Latin. - The Abbey, one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary, was founded in 996, even before the 1001 coronation of St. Stephen, which made Hungary a Christian nation. A thousand year later, in 1996, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. - This small booklet is a brief history of the Abbey through the short biographies of the Abbots and Archabbots, from Anastasius Astricus through Chrysostomus Novak, who died in 1828. - There are many detailed scholarly works about the history of the Abbey, written for academics, and for the general public, as well. In contrast, this pamphlet was probably created for the benefit of the Abbey's students. The Abbey, and its Benedictine monks, are famous for the education provided by them, as well for the student body itself. It is said that the first Hungarian Crown Prince, St. Emeric (son of King St. Stephen), studied there; and so did the last Crown Prince, Otto von Habsburg. In fact, after Otto died at the age of 98 in 2011, his spectacular funeral, and internment of his body in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, was followed by his heart being buried at Pannonhalma. - Extremely rare; no copy in WorldCat, which describes only a single somewhat larger (34 p .) edition of 1842 [2 copies: British Library and The British Library, St. Pancras].
