"IT IS JUST two hundred years since John Slater of St George's proposed the establishment of a new port on Crow Lane Harbour. In the century which followed the realization of that dream, many tides have brought fortune - both good and bad - to the shores of the Town of Hamilton. It is about these days and deeds that this book is writen - a book which is not a mere chronicle of events but a living story of the people and the times which enliven this most interesting century. In the telling much has been regretfully omitted in the interests of continuity. I have been ably assisted in the choice of subject matter by those two veteran Bermudian historians, Dr Henry Wilkinson, C.B.E. and W. E. S. Zuill, Esquire who have spent countless hours reading and criticizing the script and whose generous assistance I have frequently called upon in the search for sources. The enthusiasm of the late Lawrence Gurrin, Government Archivist, is responsible for many an odd anecdote unearthed from musty manuscripts. The wearying hours spent in reading century-old newspapers and almanacs has been lightened considerably by the interest and unfailing graciousness of Miss Alice E. Gosling, Librarian-Secretary, and Mrs Terry Tucker of the Research Department whose uncanny memories of all things Bermudian have given colour to many otherwise lifeless facts. The most uninteresting task of proof-reading was undertaken by Mr D. J. Williams, Director ofEducation, who willingly added this chore to his already over-crowded programme. To the countless Bermudians whose memories I taxed in the interests of tradition I say, `Thank you!' And lastly I thank the Mayor, His Worship F. L. R. Selley, M.C.P., and the Corporation for giving me a `free hand' in the writing of this story and for their generosity in permitting that excellent photographer, Thomas Hall, to take any and all pictures necessary for the completion of the book." June 1961 Sister Jean De Chantal. Size: 8vo.
