Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Rob Lucas (illustrator). 1st. Readers could expect there was a wide difference in the varieties of plants found on NZ's coastal areas and those growing on the country's highest terrain. However, this study by John Dawson, enhanced by Rob Lucas' brilliant colour photo images, finds that some similar species are found at both geographical extremes. At both locations the vegeration is hardy, having to withstand the most severe of climatatic conditions. The survey, which begins on the shoreline and entends to the highest country ---, the domain of tussocks, alpine plants and flowers. John Dawson, who was Associate Professor of Botany at Victoria University, wrote "Lifestyles of New Zealand Forest Plants" in 1993 and this volume is a companion to that work, for which Rob Lucas was also co-author. First edition of 1996 from Victoria UP, 176 pages including references, common names glossary and index, illustrated throughout with impressive colour photographs by Lucas. Colour pictorial card covers NF with hint wear front corners, small inked name top corner half title, internally otherwise NF.

Softcover. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Ex-library. Library stamps and markings. Covers laminated in clear plastic. ; 436 pages. Page dimensions: 210 x 147mm. "This book is derived from 'New Zealand's Native Trees' by John Dawson and Rob Lucas (2012). The text was abridged and edited by Sue Hallas." "Compact enough to fit in a day-pack, it contains detailed information on all native trees found on the main islands of New Zealand, including Stewart Island and the Chathams. 'Field Guide to New Zealand's Native Trees' is organised in three main sections - conifers, tree ferns and flowering trees - and covers 209 species. A visual key to leaf shapes will help to narrow down the identification of the numerous flowering trees. Under each species, headings such as Distribution & Habitat, Size, Bark, Foliage & Habit, Flowers & Fruit lead readers straight to relevant information, and a panel of Distinguishing Features is a useful aid to quick identification. More than1500 superb photographs show the whole tree and its key features, some in very close detail.".

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Winner Best Illustrated Non-fiction Book and Book of the Year at the 2012 NZ Post Book Awards! A complete revision, of the best selling, award-winning landmark book on New Zealands native trees. New Zealands Native Trees is a landmark book, the kind that is published only once in a generation. It celebrates our unique and magnificent native forests, and describes and generously illustrates more than 320 species, subspecies and varieties. This edition has been completely brought up-to-date with a significant number of botanical revisions, as many new species have been described or reclassified in the years since the book was first published in 2011. It is organised in three main parts: conifers, tree ferns and flowering trees. After authoritative introductions to each part, genera are covered in alphabetical order. The botanical features of each species are then described in detail, along with its distribution, habitat and key relationships with other plants and animals. More than 3200 superb photographs illustrate fascinating close details of flowers, fruits and other features, and show the form of specimen trees, while wider views of habitats place the species in context. Clear-cut illustrations of leaves are included for each species, arranged in plates for easy identification of larger groups. New Zealands Native Trees, by respected authorphotographer team John Dawson and Rob Lucas, with the collaboration of several of New Zealands leading botanists, is a wonderful contribution to the documentation and understanding of the richness and diversity of New Zealands native trees and forests. Valuable as an identification guide, a reference, a resource for landscapers and gardeners, and an inspiration for a new generation of New Zealanders, this is an essential book for every home, school and library. A complete revision of the best-selling, award-winning landmark book on New Zealand's native trees. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
