Second edition, enlarged. One of the best Oregon Trail narratives. First printed in 1863 in Olympia, Washington as NOTES BY THE WAY. MEMORANDA OF A JOURNEY ACROSS THE PLAINS (a great rarity of Western Americana) and reprinted in 1872 (pretty much unprocurable as well). This second edition, enlarged by Judge Hewitt's nephew and namesake, with plates and a map added. "A well-written and detailed account of an overland journey from St. Joseph, Mo., to Olympia, Wash., in 1862" (Soliday). "This is a detailed narrative to the Northwest part of the nation via South Pass. The author went from Ft. Laramie by way of the Lander cutoff through what is now Wyoming and over the Mullan Road to the Columbia. Hewitt's journal is one of the few printed of an 1862 crossing" (Mintz). The book has no list of illustrations. Some copies of the book have 59 illustrations on inserted plates. This copy has 58, but the plate reported often missing, "Variegated Bluffs -- Green River" facing page 230, is present here. Graff 1875. Howes H447. Mattes 1845. Mintz 222. Smith 4393. The third and much expanded edition of the narrative which first appeared in 1862 under the title, NOTES BY THE WAY, and one of the best of all Oregon Trail narratives. Hewitt's journey followed, for the most part, a hitherto unknown and dangerous route, from Dundee, Illinois, to St. Joe, then up to Council Bluffs, overland to Laramie, Fort Hall, up to Coeur d'Alene, Spokane Falls, Portland and Olympia. He kept a detailed diary, and this narrative is one of the few substantial accounts of an 1862 crossing.
