Condition: Fine. Limited Edition, and First Edition Thus. On Japon Imperial. Limited edition, of which this copies was inadvertently unnumbered but which was probably part of the first or second most limited tranch of the first 65 or 130 copies, based on this copy being accompanied by a suite of plates in one or two states, the larger illustrations being in two states, and thus probably fitting into the most exclusive tranch. 4to. 281 pp. 43 color illustrations contained within the work proper. Wraps bound in. Some minor wear to the leather spine and the marbled paper on the edges of the slipcase. Half Morocco, with marbled cloth folio accompanying and both fitting into a slipcase.

Belle édition illustrée par Raphaël Collin, tirée à 485 exemplaires sur papier japon, le nôtre un des 355 japon sans suite. Paru initialement en 1896, cet ouvrage fit le succès des éditions du Mercure de France. Dès 1896, l'ouvrage parait dans la collection Guillaume avec des illustrations d'Antoine Calbet et reparait au Mercure dans une édition de luxe. Notre édition est déjà la troisième édition illustrée avant de nombreuses autres. Le succès est notamment dû aux scènes libertines émaillant l'ouvrage. Toutes les gravures sont sous serpente. Reliure signée Franz, demi-maroquin cerise à coins, filets en bordure, dos orné et mosaïqué à l'antique, tête dorée, couvertures et dos conservés. Petits frottis, petit accroc sur la coiffe supérieure. Très bel exemplaire.

Superbe réalisation dans laquelle est inserée le specimen de l'ouvrage ainsi qu'une suite supplementaire en noir.
