"With Constantinople as its capital and control of lands around the Mediterranean basin, the Ottoman Empire was at the centre of interactions between the Eastern and Western worlds for six centuries. While the empire was once thought to have entered a period of decline following the death of Suleiman the Magnificent, this view is no longer supported by the majority of academic historians. The empire continued to maintain a flexible and strong economy, society, and military throughout the seventeenth and much of the eighteenth century.".

This event was a turning point in European history. For Austria the victory had great significance. Belgrade had been considered impregnable. The Turks~whose empire extended far into Asia and bordered the frontiers of Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Russia~ had held the fortress for nearly two centuries. It was the base from which they had mounted their recurrent attacks against the Imperial dominions and from which, in 1683, they had reached the gates of the Emperor's capital, Vienna. For France Prince Engen's capture of Belgrade was a grave setback. The threat posed by the Ottoman army to the southeastern frontier of the Emperor's territories had been of the utmost assistance to France in her struggle with Austria. Furthermore, France had enjoyed a commercially advantageous relationship with the Turkish capital of Constantinople, then one of the world's key trading points. Now the Sultan, determined to avoid further defeat, made far~reaching concessions to appease Austria, much to the disadvantage of France. For the next twenty~two years Austria, joined in 1726 by Russia, endeavored to dismember the Ottoman Empire while France strove to frustrate them and to incite the Turks to resist their enemies. The final triumph by Villeneuve, the French Ambassador in Constantinople, was the result of one of the most brilliant diplomatic coups of the century. Told against the splendid background of court life in Vienna, St. Petersburg, Paris, and Constantinople, the story of the struggle for the Ottoman Empire dramatically portrays the history of the times, the prevailing cultural influences, and the leading personalities of the participating countries. These were the Austrian Emperor Charles VI, devoted to the arts and hunting, concerned above all to maintain the prestige and honor of his family; Czarina Anne I of Russia and her three advisors~the incorruptible Ostermann, the handsome, utterly ruthless Munnich, and her lover Biron; the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, impressed only by magnificent gifts or by force of arms; Cardinal Fleury of France, responsible for appointing the Marquis de Villeneuve as Ambassador to Constantinople; and the persistent, indomitable Villeneuve himself. Lavender Cassels conceived the idea for this book in a castle in Austria, where she was shown a diary dating back to the time of Emperor Charles VI. In the course of her research she found that no detailed study had yet been made of the fascinating events of the struggle that culminated in 1740 in the Peace of Belgrade. In her fully documented and skillful narrative, Lavender Cassels illuminates this small but important segment of history.
