Volume 1 (text) has light shelf soiling to bottom foredge of pages and page 15 and preceding unnumbered B&W plate have 1" crease at bottom forecorner, otherwise unmarked and fine. Volume 2 (plates) has no discernible flaws. Dust jackets for both volumes are unclipped and protected in removable mylar and have wear at head and foot of spines, otherwise clean and unmarked. Slipcase in charcoal cloth with laid-on titles has light rubbing at open end, otherwise fine. Catalog raisonne of 54 illuminated manuscripts of the "Divine Comedy" in European and American collections, illustrated with 1100 miniatures that appear in the earliest editions within a decade of Dante's death to 1465. Volume 1 has 378 pages, and Volume 2 has 538 pages, including general and iconographic indexes, list of illustrations by manuscript with descriptions of each, and copious bibliography. Volume 1 has 131 comparative illustrations; in Volume 2 521 monochrome plates and 16 color plates. The postal charges quoted are for an average-sized book. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj slightly sunned and rubbed at extremities). Volume 1 serves as a catalog encompassing all important illustrated codices of the "Divine Comedy". Complementing the catalog, Volume 2 features approximately eleven hundred miniatures drawn from a more extensive material. Preceding the catalog are three essays: one on literary and critical themes by Professor Singleton, another on the nature of late medieval illustration and illumination styles by Professor Meiss, and a third on the essential iconographic aspects of miniatures by Professor Brieger. A fourth chapter, also by Brieger, summarizes the illustrations canto by canto in relation to the poem itself. In Volume 1, a section of plates provides comparative illustrations for the essays. The work is enriched with a comprehensive bibliography, as well as general and iconographic indexes.
