Carl Oscar (or Oskar) Borg (1879 - 1947) was a Swedish-born painter who settled in the United States and became known for views of California and the SouthWest. Borg emigrated to the United States in 1902 and settled in California. He worked as a scene painter for the movie industry in Los Angeles, and had his first exhibition in 1905. His work was immediately recognized by critics and collectors, and he was soon one of the most popular painters in California. Borg was influenced by the natural beauty of the American Southwest, and he often traveled to Arizona and New Mexico to paint. He was also known for his portraits of Native Americans. His work is characterized by its vibrant colors, bold brushstrokes, and dramatic compositions. Borg was a founding member of the Painters Club of Los Angeles and the California Art Club. He was also one of the first art directors for a major movie studio in Hollywood. He died in Santa Barbara, California, on May 8, 1947.

Condition: Very Good. Original, hand-colored etching of the Lewis and Clark expedition by Carl Oscar Borg. Signed by the artist in pencil in the margin. Etching measures 14" x 11" (including margins) and was hand-colored with watercolors; mounted on stiff board and has masking tape around edges on verso. No publication date. Very good, with light toning in margins and marginalia in ink on verso; the right edge of the board is jagged, as if cut from a frame at one point (it does not affect the etching). Carl Oscar Borg (1879-1947) was a Swedish born artist, poet and printmaker who immigrated to California in 1902 and became well-known for his views of the West. A detailed portrayal of the Lewis and Clark expedition, this etching depicts four members navigating nearby a river. ; Signed by Artist.
