First Edition
VOLUME I ONLY of a three volume set. Probable American first edition. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 16cm. i-xxviii, 29-657 pages. No dust jacket. Rebound in modern green pebbled cloth spine and board corners; lighter green boards; bright gilt stamping to spine (although unmarked this rebinding probably done by Greenwood, Mississippi's Norris Bookbinding Company as it certainly reflects their exterior aesthetic and impeccably firm stitching). Toning and dark stains to text block edges. New endpapers and flyleaves. Some foxing and occasional slight toning to leaves; pencil ownership inscription dated March 1858 on original second front flyleaf preceding frontis. Tissue guard sheet between frontispiece and title page; foldout color map between pages vi-vii; b/w illustrations on paged leaves. Binding is firm. Please note that this thick/ book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.5 pounds (1.58 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
Sentiment? and signature, in corner of shiny paper, 14 x 15.5cm, edges somewhat unevenly cut, good condition. I'd appreciate input from someone who can read the script to establish whether this was part of a letter or document.

Title continues: 'With Notes And Extracts From Mr. Richardson's Account Of The Expedition, And A Sketch Of Denham And Clapperton's Expedition, by the American Editor'. Born in Hamburg Germany, Henry Barth was one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa. His scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and collected many. He established friendships with African rulers and scholars during his five years of travel (1850-1855). After the deaths of two European companions, he completed his travels with the aid of Africans. Afterwards, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German.

'.one of the most fruitful expeditions ever undertaken in inner Africa. In addition to journeys across the Sahara, Barth traversed the country from Lake Chad and Bagirmi on the east to Timbuktu on the west and Cameroon on the south, making prolonged sojourns in the ancient sultanates or emirates of Bornu, Kano, Nupe, Sokoto and Gando and at Timbuktu. He studied minutely the topography, history, civilizations and resources of the countries he visited. For accuracy, interest, variety and extent of information Barth's Travels have few rivals among works of the kind. It is a book that will always rank as a standard authority on the regions in question.'. (Encyc. Britan., 11th Edn.) cfIbrahim-Hilmy I 53-54.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First American Edition. Vols. I-III Only (of 5). 11 folding maps, 36 tinted litho plates, xi, 635, xi, 676, xxxvi, 578p. plus [2]p. publisher's advertisements at end of Vol. III. Green cloth. Vols. I and III have new endpapers and have been rebacked, with almost all of the original backstrips mounted. 23cm. Ex church library with oval red stamp of upstate New York church on each title-page and a few other library markings including evidence of removal of a small label toward base of backstrips, above which "Ta." has been imprinted in gilt on each backstrip. Contents have a little age-toning around edges but are otherwise quite sound and clean. An important account of African exploration and discovery. While the three volume Harper edition of 1857-1859 is often described as the first American edition, we believe that this much scarcer and far more appealing Appleton edition is the true first American edition. This Appleton edition mimics the London edition of 1857-1858 except that the title-page in these volumes lists Appleton as the publisher and New York as the place of publication. A small diamond-shaped sticker ("Bound by Westleys & Co London") preserved and mounted in a corner of the new rear endpaper indicates that these volumes were originally bound in England.
