Synopsis

The present volume is a critical edition of metrical lines found in the Greek Alexander Romance, primarily in the oldest version (cod. Paris. G. 1711 = A, edited by W.Kroll in 1926). In some places the second Greek version (B) has contributed to restoring the text. A separate edition of the choliambics was made in 1929 by A.D.Knox. These and earlier incomplete editions are listed in a short preface which also discusses editorial problems and principles. Since Kroll desisted from restoring all verses of which he found vestiges in A and Knox confined himself to editing the choliambics, the present edition contains more verses than those menitone: 373 choliambics, 42 iambic trimeters, 16 dactylic hexameters and a few more of uncertain metrical value. The apparatus criticus has been made rather extensive; it includes all conjectures worth mentioning which have been proposed in various books and papers. Furthermore, it reproduces verses restored by Knox but rejected by the present editor. An Index verborum gives proper names and a copious selection of Greek words.
