The Swiss artist Klaus Born, born 1945 in a small village in the Swiss mountains, trained as a teacher and bookseller in Zurich in the late 1960s. He turned to art in 1972 and went to the Zurich College of Art for his education in drawing, etching, and painting. His first drawings and etchings - realistic, full of symbols and aggression - reflect his social criticism and his political engagement. A two-year stay at the Swiss Institute in Rome 1979-81 became a turning point in Born's development as an artist, leading him from attempts at surrealism to his current large-size abstract paintings. Drawing, though, remains an important part of Born's work, including his artist's books, in which he takes up a graphic dialogue with their printed content and scripture. This first monograph on Klaus Born records his life and his work of the past twenty-five years in numerous colour illustrations and with two essays by Guido Magnaguagno and Sibylle Omlin.
