500pages. poche. broché. 1940.

Review:

‘He can weave a web of suspense, laced with historical and mythological references that bait the imagination, satisfactorily embroidered with bullet holes and bloodshed.’
The Times

‘Has a handsome literate style.’
Independent

‘One of the most provocative thriller writers around.’
Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover:

The barbed wire stretched for miles and eternity. Everything it contained, everyone who lived behind it, was finite, trapped, condemned to die, even the guards with their deaths – heads uniforms and sub – machine guns, even the camp commandant with his expensive tastes and sophisticated vices, even the dogs with their sharp teeth and vigilant eyes.

It is wartime and John Ridgeforth has been smuggled, his mission deadly secret, into a country which he thought he knew, thought he loved. It is a country where public lynchings are condoned: where concentration camps are rife; where neighbour spies on neighbour, and lovers are dangerous enemies; where Jews, Blacks, Communists are branded with the letter K. A country where K stands for kike; and, too, for the Ku Klux Klan.

Easterman's powerful flight of imagination carries us into a nightmare world which is also uncannily close to truth and our worst fears, most haunting dreads. We have seen fanaticism; now we see what could so easily have been all our yesterdays ... This terrifying what – if novel comes from an author at the height of his powers.

Daniel Easterman was born in Ireland in 1949, was a lecturer at Newcastle University for several years, and is fluent in several languages. Dubbed by 'The Purloined Letter' as "easily the best thriller writer working today", he is the author of nine critically acclaimed novels including 'The Judas Testament, Day of Wrath' and 'The Final Judgement'. He also writes full length ghost stories under the name of Jonathan Aycliffe. He lives in the North of England with his wife, Beth, a writer of popular books on alternative medicine.

ACCLAIM FOR DANIEL EASTERMAN'S PREVIOUS NOVELS

'The Judas Testament'

"This is the sort of book that mega seller Jack Higgins might hope to write when he grows up. Its scale is both human and fantastic, its duplicities tortuous yet veering on the credible, its protagonists cut out of more than just cardboard."
THE TIMES

'Day of Wrath'

"A blood soaked saga of human frailty, duplicity and insanity. Guaranteed to keep you awake at night, even after you have finished it."
THE TIMES

'The Final Judgement'

"Blends tomorrow the world villains with heroic protagonist. Notable for above average complexities, exotic locales, and a wealth of slam bang action."
