Il en repartira près d'un an plus tard, après avoir fait le tour des Merveilles de Sicile. Le récit de son voyage offre une description cristalline, et parfois malicieuse, de la société sicilienne d'alors, de son apathie "sirocale", du rite des promenades nocturnes à Palerme et des discrètes escapades par lesquelles elles se concluent ; il offre aussi une topologie exacte d'un paysage souvent déserté, construit à même la lave, triste et noir par endroits, vitrifié ou figé sous des neiges de sel ; enfin et surtout, il évoque la traversée d'une contrée jalonnée de reliques et de fragments, de traces et d'inscriptions à demi lisibles, paysage qui s'offre au déchiffrement, mémoire de l'antique où Denon vient chercher les signes miraculeux d'un passé immémorial et pourtant présent.
