Sheffield city centre which was familiar to our Victorian predecessors has largely been lost to us, destroyed by heavy bombing in the Blitz of 1940 or obliterated by later developments and the demands of the motor car. Today we have only glimpses of the townscape that they created in the last twenty years of the nineteenth Century in the handful of distinctive buildings that survive. Through the work of Sheffield’s Victorian Photographers, it has been possible in this book to re-create the experience of a complete walk through the city centre as seen through the eyes of our great grandparents. This is an extremely evocative journey, made possible by the discovery of a large collection of photographs in a city auction, from which this selection has been made. Few of the photographs have never been published before, so prepare for a unique journey of discovery into Sheffield’s past. This book was originally published as an A4 book in 1999.
