In the long history of English literature William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is the writer who achieved the most dramatic transformations of the poetic scene almost singlehanded. A leading figure among the Romantic generation which included Coleridge and Scott, he created out of his personal communion with nature a new poetic which had a profound moral and spiritual influence on the entire nineteenth century. The present selection includes all his famous lyrics and substantial extracts from narrative poems including The Prelude.

About the Author:
William Wordsworth was born in Cumbria in 1770. In 1795, having received a legacy that enabled him to devote himself to poetry, Wordsworth collaborated on the LYRICAL BALLADS with Coleridge and produced many of his finest poems. In 1799 he moved to Cumbria and continued to write poetry. He became Poet Laureate in 1843 and died in 1850.
Synopsis:
Written in free metres, this selection of verse by one of America's major 19th century poets ranges across every kind of subject in a characteristically exalted mood. This volume covers every period of Whitman's career, and includes many poems from "Leaves of Grass".
