In a simple format, the book takes the reader through the different "faces" or types of homeless experience and presents rare insights into the experience of squatting, sleeping rough and begging as well as hostels and hotels.
The aim of the study was to assist in the development of appropriate temporary accommodation drawing from the experience and views of homeless people. The approach adopted was one which sought to understand homelessness as a complex interplay of financial, physical, social and individual factors.
The design recommendations from the research have contributed to current hostel developments by the Salvation Army. In this way, this book provides a good example of the way in which social research can inform policy and design.
