Synopsis:
Horace Nicholls was a photographer who captured the glamour, style and class complexity of the Edwardian era. He was fascinated by the crowds of rich and poor to be found at events during the English season this book illustrates his ability to turn his camera to a variety of events - at one moment to Mr Vanderbilt's luncheon party and the next to the flow of bodies jammed together at the races. Gail buckland tells Nicholls' life story and presents a poignant social commentary on an age well described in literature but not, until now, adequately represented photographically. The book will be published in 1989, the year which celebrates photography's 150th birthday as well as the 150th anniversary of Henley, the highlight of the English season. The publication date also coincides with the Royal Photographic Society's exhibition of Nicholls' work.
