As a result, she has resorted to reading romantic literature to escape the emptiness of her life, but has become caught up in a fantasy world, where knights in shining armour really do rescue beautiful princesses from dragons. With her typical wry wit and craft, Charlotte Lennox parodies the sentimental novel and writers such as Miguel de Cervantes ("The Female Quixote" is an inversion of his "Don Quixote de la Mancha"). In this intentionally anti-romantic novel, Lennox addressed the problem of letting the imagination overpower reality. Praised by Samuel Richardson, Samuel Johnson and Henry Fielding, "The Female Quixote" was popular throughout the nineteenth century and was translated into French, German and Spanish.

About the Author:

Charlotte Lennox (1729-1804) was born in Gibralter, lived for a time in New York and later became a ladies' companion in London. An unsuccessful actor, she wrote two collections of poetry, five novels and two plays. Samuel Johnson thought her superior to his other female literary friends, such as Hannah More and Fanny Burney.
