I have to admit I didn't want to write a book about the
Aztecs - they're so HORRIBLE - but a librarian urged me to. "Please, we
haven't got a novel to put in the Aztec box." When I started to research I
realised why. When you write a book you live with the people you're
writing about for months on end. I didn't like the Aztecs, though they did
have some good qualities, and I liked the Spanish conquistadors who
destroyed them, even less. I did discover one wonderful Spaniard, a monk
called Bartolome de las Casas. He was a peace-loving man centuries ahead
of his time. He believed that all men were equal in the sight of God. He
wanted people of different races to try and understand each other. I wanted
to tell people about him and that helped me write the book.
