This is a comprehensive textbook edited by two experienced nurses and with contributions from nurses experienced in the field of perioperative nursing in the Antipodes. The editors clearly explain in the preface that the book 'is written for the beginning practitioner in the operating room, some one who has completed a university degree in nursing or its equivalent'. I would suggest that student nurses on placement in the operating theatre might find the book to be a useful source of information on operating room procedures. Certainly they will find the sections on anatomy useful for revision purposes. As a source of information for practitioners in Perioperative nursing the editors have produced an excellent resource. However, as the editors point out , the nurse's role in the operating theatre varies in different countries and hospitals and will not always be as outlined in this book. Nevertheless, as the editors point out, the principles of perioperative nursing apply internationally. The aim is to 'provide easy-to-read and easy-to find information about procedures, conditions and care that the novice to the area may not have encountered before'. As some one who has limited experience of operating theatre procedures, having only worked in the operating theatre as a student, I believe that this aim has been achieved. The text is clearly written with effective use of diagrams, tables, photographs and bold headings highlighting particular topics. Boxed tables are used to highlight 'easy-to-find information'. At the end of each chapter there are references for further reading. In some instances there are references to web sites that can be accessed for further information. As the internet is becoming more accessible and widely used in the health care and nursing practice I feel that the editors could have included a separate section on websites that they found to be useful in compiling this text and that might also be useful to their readers.
