THE HAUGHTERS of RALSTON is not only a historical novel but it is also a contemporary one whose characters’ struggles, are very real and universal-love, greed, rivalry, hate, duty, responsibility, and burdens, whether they be in the 1700s or today. This novel revolves around a family, a town, its inhabitants, and the enduring family Manse. This story is told by a direct descendent of the Haughter family, Superior Court Judge Jonathan Jason Haughter. The Judge is on a personal journey to better understand his family, its many generations and its place in the history of Ralston, as well as better understand himself. Part One is set in the 1700s and focuses on the founding Haughter family and the inhabitants of the New Jersey pre-Revolutionary War county and town of Ralston. In Part Two of the novel, present day, the narrator Superior Court Judge Haughter is at a personal cross roads. He is struggling with his own guilt, pain, and anger over a failed marriage, a son’s untimely death, the impending marriage of his daughter. He is determined to sell the 300 year old family Manse which has been the bedrock and the link from the past to the present for the family and town. The events leading up to the wedding day of his daughter and the actual wedding where he confronts his true reasons of antagonism for his ex-wife serve as the vehicle for the Judge, the man, to reconcile his feelings and set a course for the remainder of his life.
