The Rubáiyat is a collection of mystical verses attributed to 11th-12th century poet, astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyám. It is a seductively subversive work which ruminates on the nature of fate, death, love and the transience of human life. It charts the course of a single day, from dawn to nightfall.
The poet and translator Edward Fitzgerald first encountered Omar's poetry in 1856, as a copy of a 15th century manuscript. His translation attracted fashionable and famous admirers, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Ruskin and Algernon Swinburne, and soon began to capture the imagination of many other freethinkers of the time.
In the past century, the Rubáiyat's sensual warmth and romantic melancholy have gained a huge following, not least among celebrities, musicians and film-makers. This beautifully illustrated, silk-bound edition is a perfect gift for anyone who has still to fall under Omar's spell.
