Lauren Summerville has spent her restless, solitary life living on the surface, trying to control her feelings, fearful of the darkness that lurks beneath. Each time she is forced to cross the line from her rational world to an irrational reality, she escapes to her imaginary island of refuge, isolated from people who make her crazy. "Runs in the family," her mother warns. Now in her sixties, Lauren realizes if she never risks opening her heart, she will have wasted her life.
