It is 935 A.D. and the North is in turmoil. The Norse king, Harald Fairhair, has died, leaving the High Seat of the realm to his murderous son, Erik Bloodaxe. To solidify his rule, Erik ruthlessly kills all claimants to his throne, save one: his teenage brother Hakon, who is being raised in the Christian courts of Engla-lond. Summoned by the enemies of Erik, young Hakon returns to the Viking North to face his brother and claim his birthright, only to learn that victory will demand sacrifices beyond his wildest nightmares.

It is the year AD 927 and Hakon, son of King Harald Fairhair, is being transported to a life as foster son to King Athelstan of Engla-lond. Hakonā€™s education is at the hands of a Christian priest, and Hakon is baptized into Christianity. Word reaches Hakon that his father has died and Hakonā€™s brother, Erik has killed two of his brothers in battle and has taken the throne. Hakon is persuaded to go back to Trondlaw to remove Erik from power and to restore peace to the land.

God's Hammer is a wonderful story of the struggles of Hakon Haraldsson to overcome the fears of his people and to become the first Christian King of what is now called Norway. At first I had difficulties reading the story, but after the first couple of chapters, I was swept up in the action and enthralled by the descriptions of Hakonā€™s struggle. Readers will not be disappointed in this book.
