It is the year AD 927 and Hakon, son of King Harald Fairhair, is being transported to a life as foster son to King Athelstan of Engla-lond. Hakonā€™s education is at the hands of a Christian priest, and Hakon is baptized into Christianity. Word reaches Hakon that his father has died and Hakonā€™s brother, Erik has killed two of his brothers in battle and has taken the throne. Hakon is persuaded to go back to Trondlaw to remove Erik from power and to restore peace to the land.
God's Hammer is a wonderful story of the struggles of Hakon Haraldsson to overcome the fears of his people and to become the first Christian King of what is now called Norway. At first I had difficulties reading the story, but after the first couple of chapters, I was swept up in the action and enthralled by the descriptions of Hakonā€™s struggle. Readers will not be disappointed in this book.
