At the end of the 19th century Mark Greenwood sets sail for the Far East. He has been beguiled by his three elder brothers’ tales of adventure and opportunity. On the voyage he falls in love with Emily Alexander, who is returning to her family home in the Himalayan foothills. Their wish to marry is opposed by her father, who does not consider Mark to be a suitable match for his daughter. Mark is also harried by a fellow worker who seems to harbour a personal and deep-rooted grudge against him. Determined to prove himself, Mark begins work in the huge railway workshops at Jamalpur but he is fired after a violent confrontation with his nemesis. Fearing the end of his dream of marrying Emily, Mark sets out on new ventures which, while being risky, hold out the promise of great wealth. Indian-born David Lindsley provides a realistic and compelling portrait of the ordinary men and women who endured the risks and enjoyed the beauty of an emerging nation.

About the Author:
David Lindsley turned his hand to writing novels after travelling around the world working on power stations. His first novel, Far Point, was published in 2009 and won a prize in the Engineering Media Awards contest in that year. This was followed by The Darkfall Switch in 2011. Blind to Danger appeared later in 2011. These three novels comprised the Dan Foster Trilogy, based on the exploits of an eponymous engineer who becomes involved in investigating political intrigue and corruption in the power-generation industry. A collection of short stories, Frame by Frame formed a divider between David’s contemporary engineering-related novels and the appearance of Ribbons of Steel, which chronicled the exploits of a young locomotive engineer working in the workshops of the East India Railway Company in the last quarter of the 19th Century. David and his wife live near the Thames on the south-western suburbs of London. They have three sons and five grandchildren.
