Though the present work does not pretend either to say the last word on the questions involved, or to deal exhaustively with every detail of this branch of architecture - u - indeed, for the reasons given in ~the first chapter, examples from other countries have been for the most part ignored - yet it is hoped that no essential matter has been omitted, and that the writer is contributing something to the literature of the subject which has hitherto been wanting.
