Adalbert Stifter wurde am 23. Oktober 1805 in Oberplan (Böhmerwald) geboren. Stifter wollte gern Landschaftsmaler werden. Den Lebensunterhalt verdiente er sich als Privatlehrer in Wiener Adelshäusern. 1848 zog Stifter nach Linz und lebte dort die letzten Jahrzehnte seines Lebens. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren war er schwerkrank und litt unter Depressionen. Ob er Selbstmord beging, ist nicht sicher nachzuweisen. Er starb am 28. Januar 1868.

Wendell Frye was born in 1940. He received his BA degree from Clark University, his MA from Middlebury College, and his PhD from Indiana University. His field of specialization is German, and he is a Professor of German at Hartwick College.
