Geboren am 22.03.1852 in Hamburg-Wandsbek, gestorben am 30.01.1933 in Marburg. Birt entstammt einer alten Hamburger Kaufmannsfamilie. Von 1869-1872 besuchte er das Johanneum in Hamburg und studierte danach in Leipzig und Bonn klassische Philologie. Er promovierte 1876 und habilitierte sich 1978 in Marburg. Er war Rektor der Marburger Universität von 1902-1903 und lehrte dort bis zu seinem Tod.
