About the Author:
Dr. Bharat S. Shah was born in a village in Gujarat state, in India, but grew up in Mumbai (Bombay, then), studied at Babu Panalal P. Jain High School, and Elphinstone College, and received MBBS from Topiwala National Medical College (Nair Hosp). He came to the USA in 1967, passed the Internal Medical Board, and specialized in diseases of chest. Dr. Shah has been interested in issues related to the foreign doctors, and has written on that subject in ethnic and medical press. He has published several original research papers in scientific journals. He retired from active practice of Medicine in January 2007. India, with its Gujarati and 15 or so other languages, religions, and culture has been at his heart. He has written books to teach/learn Gujarati, English, Sanskrit languages, Gujarati and Devanagari Scripts, and An Introduction to Jainism - an ancient religion advocating extreme non-violence. These books are innovative in approach, and are tailored to the needs of the future generations. Dr. Shah has published them over the last 25 years, under the name Setubandh Publications. Gujarati book is published in India as well. Bharat Shah's creative writings are social commentaries, one-act plays (five), humorous articles, etc. and have been published in Gurjari, Gujarat Times, India Abroad, Janmbhoomi Pravasi, etc. He was interviewed on Bombay TV in late 1980s after Gujarati book came out. His latest work is a short documentary novel in Gujarati, describing our experiences during his wife Usha's liver transplant, called "Sameepe" published by Rangdwar Prakashan, Ahmedabad in August 2003. Bharat Shah has translated it into English, entitled "Dawn at Midnight," and it is expected to be published by amazon/Createspace in early 2011. He has served as the secretary of the Gujarati Literary Academy of North America from 1992-94, and then as its president during 1994-96. He had prepared its Constitution, organized its mailing list, and made the Academy's day-to-day activities self-sustaining. He broadened the scope of programs beyond just Gujarati, to include classical Sanskrit literature, and contemporary world literature, especially the plays. He enjoys talking to the youngsters. He has delivered several lectures on Jainism, and has administered Crash Courses to teach Gujarati and/or Devanagari scripts. "Panic Disorder" is his second documentary novel, published by amazon/Createspace.
