The primary role of nurses is to identify and solve patient problems and Thinking as a Nurse looks at influences of clinical problem solving such as empathy, what the patient says to the nurse, pathophysiology, nurse-physician relationships, teamwork, and setting priorities. Memorization and an overemphasis on technical skills are discussed as possible pitfalls in the education of nurses. The book helps students study for nursing examinations and be more adroit in their clinical practices. There are chapters addressing studying techniques and how to deal with NCLEX-type questions.

About the Author:

Bruce Austin Scott grew up in the South, down the street from William Faulkner’s brother, Murray, in a family of six, wanting to be an architect or journalist. He floundered in his first attempt at college, joined the Navy, and as a hospital corpsman worked alongside nurses. Out of the service, he completed a B.S.N. at The University of Alabama in Huntsville and an M.S.N. at The University of Texas at Austin. He taught in six nursing programs before settling in for the last 13 years at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California where he maintains a clinical practice in medical-surgical nursing at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. He has contributed to and reviewed many nursing publications but has never tried his hand at a book until Thinking as a Nurse. Bruce is the divorced father of four children: Martha, Luke, Hope and Julie. He likes long flat-surface bike rides, swimming freestyle across a sunlit pool, and playing golf when there's no waiting on the tees.
